My Role: UX architect, UI designer, UX writer(bilingual in English and Chinese) & Product manager

Achievement: Designed the overall structure of an IoT SaaS Platform, worked with 5 cloud engineers and launched 4 applications in 8 months using an agile project management approach.

Ultron ONE is the integrated cloud management platform, providing real-time data and flexible combo applications for householders and organizations to experience seamless and painless communication with IoT devices.

Plan the IoT solutions like LEGO

In order to address all needs across every section, I plan the IoT solutions as LEGO bricks. The administrators can choose the most optimal applications and even the specific customized fluid components in the platform.

Platform Structure

The concept of so-called “fluid” is borrowed from “water.” That is the essence consistent, but the shape and appearance may change depending on which of situations. For example, all of the applications have the feature of Hashtags. However, the words and phrases of specific solutions have to follow the industry conventions through the domain knowledge of the database in our system. As a result, the hashtag “Recovery Room” will be applied in healthcare solutions instead of “War Room” used in office solutions.

Platform User flow

Based on the above concept, I have planned and completed 4 applications development, including OAM of monitoring and controlling IoT devices, IAM of managing resource access, Data center of determining strategies, and ACS of implementing versatile scenarios like Smart Locker, Access control, etc.

Products sprung up*

OAM

The OAM(Operation Administration and Maintenance) is designed to present a holistic vision to control and monitor all devices in a field.

We minimize administrators’ management load by one page but versatile functions. Our subscribers, therefore, can precisely indicate issues and promptly deal with them.

The application was incepted in early 2019. I iteratively optimized the interface and functionality to keep the users informed about relevant situations of IoT devices.

IAM

The IAM(Identity and Access Management) as a resource center controls the platform authentication and authorization

This application is what I proposed to pivot from one service to the SaaS (Software as a Service) model such that the system can cater to both our subscribers’ flexible needs and our sustainable development.

The project was delivered three months later. In addition to all of UX/UI design, I compiled the bilingual user manual independently.

Data Center

Data Center aims to provide data analysis by studying the data patterns to help decision-makers discover insights and unlocking opportunities.

With more and more IoT devices released to the market, we collect data, such as the number of activated devices, registered users, device GPS, to help ourselves and our vendors make better business operating decisions.

The 1st version of the product was launched in Q3 2020 and version 2 was released in 2021 Q2. Also, I initiated to implement ETL pipeline to process data more efficiently in the future.

ACS

The ACS(Access control system) is meant to manage and control users’ states between entrances and exits of stuff.

Boiled down to its essentials, the ACS can apply in many areas, such as Locker, e-Check in, and Door. We extended the features such as booking a locker and integrating logistics firms’ and contractors’ whitelists.

This project was carried out in a kind of game. This application faces B2B and B2C, and contains interfaces of website and mobile design. The team I led was the only one delivering full functions on time in July 2021.

Personal Growth

Website design is not like mobile app design. There is more space on the website to arrange informative content. However, I have to carefully consider whether this unit of information is important or rarely needed as every material in an interface will compete with each other and diminish each other’s relative visibility.

The platform design spans users’ needs and system structure. I always think of how to keep the balance for both of them and convince stakeholders as well. All I can do is leverage design (e.g. elements or modularization) to maximize the system’s flexibility.

The platform started at the beginning of 2021 and has been developing other apps in full swing to become an omni IoT control hub. I believe that our team can follow this framework to move forward to the next stage.
