My role: Lead UX/UI designer, UX architect, UX writer(bilingual in English and Chinese) & product manager
Achievement: Led the team to launch the company’s first product, and it has become a flagship product up to now.
Ultron Utility is an application that provides users cross-brand operation hubs and experiences a seamless onboarding process for IoT devices.
IoT as the next Industrial Revolution, but…
All things are toward a specific goal of being connected and interdependent, but all links of IoT industry are fragmented. Users have to install a pile of appliance applications and then are confronted with a frustrating onboarding process including configurations, setting up one by one, etc.
There are too many pain points, and therefore we have to break down the solution into steps.
Product Life Cycle
Phase I: Snap Connection
In 2018, WiFigarden Inc. sniffed out an opportunity after most employees failed to onboard IoT devices.* We developed a technology right off the bat and took out the patent later. It helped end-users deploy all IoT devices simultaneously and configure them just one time.
As the only in-house UX/UI designer, I independently finished interaction design, information architecture, bilingual wording in English and Chinese, and the prototype.
Ultron Utility App was launched on 19th October 2019 after ten months of development. As the only product manager, I delivered the project on time. Meanwhile, I helped the company become a google partner this year.
I was, therefore, the only star performer this year.
Phase II: Scalable Ecosystem
The first Mandarin-language version of Google Nest Mini hit the shelves at the end of 2019. More and more manufacturers of traditional home appliances were eager to turn smart. WiFigarden Inc. seized opportunities to integrate hardware and software to boost their upgrade.
I promoted components, also called modularization, for appliance features in the app and delivered the project less than three months in 2020 Q3. Whether what kinds of brands they were, home appliances would be affordable smart based on my design structure.
This year, WiFigarden Inc. is selected as one of the winners of the 2020 AI 50 Global AI Startups and Neo Star Top 30.
Phase III: Ubiquity
In addition to the mobile app and smart speakers, WiFigarden Inc. collaborated with the nation’s biggest system operator to develop the third product in 2021.** End-users would benefit from various interfaces to control their IoT devices.
I led the agile team and was in charge of UX/UI design. The product would be rolled out in 2021 Q4. Up to now(Aug, 2021), everything was on the schedule. It was estimated that more than 1 million subscribers could over-the-air (OTA) update their devices.
After three years of product development, the performance of Ultron Utility app was:
- Activated IoT devices over 3,500 units
- Registered accounts over 4,000 users
- Integrated IoT devices over 20 units
*There were five IoT devices, including one Xiaomi Philips Eyecare Smart Lamp 2, two DoHome Smart Plugs, one Xiaomi Mi LED Desk Lamp, and one eWeLink Smart plug.
